I was looking for a shady spot to rest while in this sculpture garden and dipped beneath the low hanging branches of a tree to find that the space was already being used as a resting place. While growing up in Poland, artist Magdalena Abakanowicz learned about a group of children who froze to death as they were transported in cattle cars from Poland to Germany during the war. This resulting ‘crowd’ of figures seemed to be growing out of the soil itself to tell the story. No two of these figures are alike. What questions do you have for these Puellae? Send them in to dearmercury@substack.com and tune in at the end of the week for answers.
