I spent the afternoon at The Drawing Center to luxuriate in Certainly an Act: Works on Paper by Pope.L I often love to imagine that there is a universe where Pope.L would be my eccentric performance art uncle, so whenever I can spend time with his work it is a delightful necessity that I do so. There’s an enormous amount of work in the exhibition but the quality of this sketch caught my eye as being unusual as it was not part of some kind of repeated motif - either written as short blocky phrases or drawn as a phallic form. This image here is from a folder of six drawings which were done as an unrealized proposal for the Venice Biennale involving at least 9 porta potty’s. :)
