I live on an island now. I’ve been away for a couple of weeks as I’ve been completing the fourth and final part of my move to Lenapehoking on the island of Manahatta. One of the first things I do when introducing myself to a place is to go to the waterways, be it an ocean, lake, creek, or network of rivers carrying the long memory of a place. In this case, I returned to “Muhheakantuck” or “Shatemuc,” meaning “the river that flows both ways” or “waters which are never still” to offer thanks for my arrival. You can imagine how startling it was to come around a bend and suddenly encounter Portrait of t. in the distance. I had an electric feeling in my gut when I gazed at what felt like my reflection or a body who had never been still - or both. Artist Sophie Kahn describes the work as beginning with “a digital file: a 3D scan of New York musician and performance artist tiger west” who describes their body as “a divided subject, marked by the collision of cancer and a trans identity”. What questions do you have for this rendered body? Send your questions in to Dear Mercury and tune in at the end of the week for answers.
